'My first one that I've got!' - Finn Russell nails his career first drop goal with his WEAKER foot
2024/03/25

Finn Russell has finally achieved his first drop goal in professional rugby, and impressively, he did it with his weaker foot! The Scotland international fly-half is well-known for his exceptional playmaking abilities and strategic game management, making it surprising that he hadn't succeeded in a drop goal until now. Russell played a key role in Bath's 42-24 victory over Sale Sharks, propelling them to second place in the Premiership standings. After leading Scotland in the Six Nations, Russell showcased his skills by assisting in five tries, securing a win for Bath without giving Sale a single point.

In the crucial 65th minute of the match, with Bath holding a narrow 27-24 lead over Sale and England's Ollie Lawrence in the sin bin, Russell made a bold move. He cleverly deceived Sale's defense on his own ten-metre line and raced into their half of the field, connecting with fullback Matt Gallagher and advancing to the Sale 22. Several phases later, scrum-half Ben Spencer passed the ball to Russell, who, finding no other option, decided to go for the three points with a drop goal.

Despite criticism from a lobby group towards the TMO for neglecting a dangerous play involving Owen Farrell, Russell's drop goal stood out as a game-changer.

Coolly using his weaker foot, he gracefully sent the ball through the posts, securing the three points and extending Bath's lead to 30-24. Russell's career-first drop goal set the stage for Bath's dominance in the final stages of the match, resulting in late scores by Tom Dunn and Lawrence, with winger Joe Cokanasiga narrowly missing out on a hat-trick due to ball spillage in a promising position.

Reflecting on this milestone, Russell admitted, "That was actually my first dropkick in my career. I've attempted it before but never succeeded until now." Despite it not being the most aesthetically pleasing drop goal, Russell remained unfazed, stating, "No one really cares about how it looks, you know." He explained that the opportunity arose when there was little action on the field and with Lawrence still off due to the yellow card, he took the chance to take the shot. Russell's determination paid off, despite almost hitting the crossbar, the ball made its way through the posts, securing a significant moment in his career.
