The prestigious award was presented at the SA Rugby Awards 2023 in Johannesburg on Thursday. Springbok Canan Moodie also impressed by winning the Young Player of the Year award, while Libbie Janse van Rensburg had a stellar year, claiming both the Springbok Women and Provincial Player of the Year titles. Etzebeth's exceptional performances on the field contributed to the Springboks' successful defense of the Webb Ellis Cup.

He faced tough competition from finalists Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, Frans Malherbe, and Damian Willemse. Janse van Rensburg, South Africa's leading points-scorer, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the sport. Moodie's consecutive Young Player of the Year win speaks to her exceptional talent and commitment. The Springboks, under the guidance of Coach Jacques Nienaber, were also honored as the Team of the Year, showcasing the nation's rugby prowess. Additional awards were presented to Ricardo Duartee for Springbok Sevens Men's Player of the Year, Corne Beets for Junior Springbok Player of the Year, Ruan Pienaar for Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year, and Cameron Hufke for Currie Cup First Division Player of the Year.

The SA Deaf Rugby Association received the Associate Member of the Year award for their commendable governance and growth within the sport. SA Rugby president Mark Alexander congratulated all the winners for their outstanding achievements in the 2023 season, highlighting the significant impact of South African rugby on national unity and pride.
