Outlander star Caitriona Balfe recently spilled some behind-the-scenes secrets about the show. Among the revelations, she highlighted a co-star that brings a touch of chaos to the set. Balfe dished on the challenges of shooting a drama that spans different time periods, particularly when it comes to working with animals.
As Balfe explained, managing animals on set can be quite a problem, considering how many creatures are featured in each season of Outlander.
Executive producer Maril Davis also chimed in, mentioning that while she loves working with cats and dogs, they can be quite a handful during filming.
Balfe agreed, stating that the animals often cause chaos on set despite being trained. No matter how many times people say they can be controlled, the animals still have a mind of their own. Balfe shared her frustration, saying that the animals simply don't care that they're making a show.
One such animal character on Outlander is Rollo, a loyal guard and hunter for the Fraser family.
Rollo is a beloved fan-favorite, but his inclusion in scenes poses challenges during post-production. The animal actors don't always cooperate, leading to multiple discarded takes.
Another animal co-star is Adso, the cat, who casually hangs around the set and shows mild interest in his surroundings. Balfe described Adso's carefree nature, noting that he couldn't care less about the show but still brings his own unique charm.
The challenges of working with animals have even led to the exclusion of certain characters from the show. Executive producer Matthew B. Roberts revealed that the character White Sow was left out due to the difficulties of incorporating animals into scenes.
