All Blacks legend Jeff Wilson believed Cam Roigard was the standout scrum-half before his injury in the Hurricanes’ match against the Highlanders. Roigard was carried off on a stretcher during the 47-12 victory and could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. While an official diagnosis is pending, speculations indicate a possible torn patella, which typically requires a six-month recovery period. This setback could see Roigard missing the remainder of the Super Rugby Pacific season, the All Blacks’ July series versus England and Fiji, as well as the Rugby Championship.
With Aaron Smith's departure, the 23-year-old was expected to step into the starting scrum-half role for the 2024 Test season. Wilson expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s heartbreaking for him, he was in exceptional form.” He added, “His impact in the previous year for the All Blacks definitely put him in contention for national selection this year. I believe he was the standout scrum-half in Super Rugby. Without jumping to conclusions, the Hurricanes have lost a key element of their game, their offensive prowess, and their threats.
They are still strong, especially with TJ Perenara, but the absence of Cam Roigard will be deeply felt.” The former All Blacks winger, Sir John Kirwan, compared Roigard to the renowned Antoine Dupont and highlighted his unique playing style. “Antoine Dupont revolutionized the role of scrum-halves, and I see a similar style in Cam,” Kirwan explained. “He blends passing and running capabilities seamlessly and is incredibly effective around the breakdown.
He was competing to be the premier scrum-half.” With Smith’s retirement and Roigard’s probable absence, Finlay Christie is expected to start at scrum-half for the upcoming series against England. This situation also raises concerns about the depth of the All Blacks in the scrum-half position; however, former player Mils Muliaina believes there are adequate alternatives available. “Losing Cam is a significant setback for the Hurricanes. Am I worried about our scrum-half options? Not entirely. I think we have sufficient depth to manage the situation if we look at the bigger picture,” Muliaina said.
“Finlay Christie and Folau Fakatava are viable choices. TJ Perenara has returned in great shape and seems more determined than ever. It appears he has slimmed down and is ready to make his mark."
