Gloucester has officially announced the acquisition of former England winger Christian Wade, who participated in the NFL's International Player Pathway in 2018 before rejoining the world of rugby in 2022 with Racing 92. Wade, previously a key player for Wasps in the Premiership, was selected by the Buffalo Bills in 2019 but never had the chance to compete in a professional NFL game. Wade has been recruited to fill the void left by Louis Rees-Zammit, who is now following in Wade's footsteps in the NFL International Player Pathway.
Gloucester and Wales were both dealt a blow by Rees-Zammit's decision to pursue a career in the NFL just before the Six Nations squad announcement. Returning to the Premiership, Wade is enthusiastic to join Gloucester next season after spending several years away. "I am thrilled to be coming back to the Premiership next season with an excellent club like Gloucester," Wade stated. "After discussions with George Skivington, I am confident in his plans and goals for the team, and I am eager to contribute to that.
I have great memories of playing at Kingsholm in Wasps' colors, so I cannot wait to step onto the pitch in Cherry & White next season." Gloucester head coach George Skivington expressed satisfaction with Wade's physical fitness and maintained belief in the Englishman's scoring abilities. Skivington also believes Wade's wealth of experience will prove valuable for the team. "It has been evident since his return from the United States that he is in even better shape and still possesses that innate ability to find the try line, as he did before he left," Skivington remarked.
"We have a talented group of back three players, but it is fantastic to have someone of Christian's caliber and experience join that squad."
