Harlequins have announced that Tabai Matson, former senior coach, will be leaving the club at the end of the 2023/24 season, following in the footsteps of Jerry Flannery who has joined the Springboks coaching team. Matson, who transitioned to the role of Director of Performance Development in 2023, has played a key role in the men's and women's programmes at Harlequins. The club confirmed that both parties have agreed to the departure and Matson will focus on supporting the Harlequins Women's programme for the remainder of the season.
It was also revealed that there will be no replacement for Matson's role as his responsibilities will be taken over by the current management and coaching staff. Director of Rugby Billy Millard praised Matson for his contributions, stating that his energy and positivity have been invaluable to the club. Matson expressed his gratitude for his time at Harlequins and stated that while he looks forward to new coaching opportunities, he will always have a passion for the club. The recent news comes after Harlequins suffered a 52-7 defeat against Saracens in the London Derby during round 13 of the Premiership.
