On 28 October 2023, the Springboks and All Blacks faced off in the Rugby World Cup Final at the Stade France in Saint-Denis. This marked the second time South Africa and New Zealand met in the final, with the Boks coming out on top just like in 1995. By securing their points through kicks, the defending champions of 2019 clinched a 11-12 victory over the All Blacks, claiming back-to-back titles and becoming the first team to win the tournament four times. Jacques Nienaber's team had a challenging path to the final, defeating Scotland and Ireland in the pool stages before facing hosts France in the quarter-finals, where they secured a narrow 28-29 win.
A tight 15-16 victory over England in the semi-finals set up the clash with New Zealand in the final. The Springboks' coaching staff, led by Nienaber and Rassie Erasmus, made bold decisions for the final match, including a controversial 7-1 split on the bench and changes to the starting halfbacks. Ten players from the starting lineup had also been part of the 2019 World Cup win over New Zealand, with the squad boasting 987 Test caps, making them the most experienced team in Springboks history.
