Scotland and Edinburgh's veteran tighthead prop, WP Nel, has declared his intention to retire at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, marking the end of a remarkable career that kicked off in 2008. The South African-born player, who made his 200th appearance for Edinburgh against the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship clash in Cape Town, joined the 'double century club' alongside Chris Paterson and Allan Jacobsen. Nel also had a successful international career, earning 61 caps for Scotland and scoring three tries, including two in Rugby World Cup matches.
Both Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend and Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt praised Nel for his dedication and contribution to the sport. Additionally, Edinburgh's managing director, Douglas Struth, commended Nel for his service and impact both on and off the field.
